More than a sense of belonging.

A Land of Pioneers

Vineyards have been grown in this region from time immemorial, but Spanish quality viticultural production did not begin until well into the 19th century. Inspired by a visit to Bordeaux, the Marquise of Murrieta and Marquise of Riscal adopted the practices of that wine-growing region aided by master winemaker Jean Pineau from Bordeaux, applied to the Tempranillo grape, the main local variety.

The oldest appellation/h5> The precursor region of La Rioja became the oldest appellation (DO) in Spain, applied in 1925 for the very first time. In 1991, it was the first region to obtain the distinction of qualified designation of origin (DOCa), a symbol of its pursuit of excellence, its commitment to the winegrowers and a guarantee to attract and please lovers of Rioja wine.

Tempranillo

The third most produced grape variety in the world, and the second most grown in Spain. Tempranillo is the queen of the Rioja, its birthplace, and was selected as the only variety of Macán for its oenological qualities.

The Macanés

This region, which lends itself to innovation in vineyards and wineries alike and where the cultural heritage of the people of the Rioja dating back to the Middle Ages effortlessly merges with the cutting edge wineries designed by notable contemporary architects, is the location chosen by Macán. Accordingly, it has taken its name from the Macanés people, who live in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, where most of the vineyards are situated.
