MACÁN

The harmony of beauty

From the best parcels in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida, Ábalos and El Villar, all situated at an average altitude of 500 meters.

Vinified in wooden storage tanks. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in French oak barrels depending on the characteristics of each vintage, but never more than 10%. Aging in new French oak barrels of extrafine grain and single-use and in 4,000 liter foudres (large wood vats) for between 16 and 18 months, to guarantee velvet-smooth tannins.

Before reaching the market, this fantastic wine is bottle-aged for three years. Aging potential is between 15 and 20 years.

"This wine is the perfect representation of the quality of the grapes we grow in the vineyard."

Macán is a modern and very personal take on highly expressive and top-quality wines of the DOCa Rioja. It is all about fineness, elegance, complexity and power, and embodies the standard of Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia. It is made exclusively with Tempranillo grapes, from a careful selection made from parcels situated on high terraces with poor and gravelly soils, with little evolution and clay-lime nature.

This is a discerning, penetrating wine, strictly suited to the present times.

VINEYARD CYCLE

The vineyard cycle was totally normal, with a mild winter, and a spring with good rains in terms of timing and quantities, which maintained the vines in an appropriate condition both health-wise and in terms of phenology, and a hot end to summer also contributing to the normal grape development.

Clear skies in September allowed for unhurried grape picking at each plot – which sought the right balance between the qualitative components, and outstanding health to ensure 2012 was a great vintage.

VINEYARD CYCLE

The heavy rainfall and cool temperatures of winter resulted in the late start of the vineyard cycle. The situation straightened itself out thanks to a spring and early summer with high temperatures and well-distributed rain that fell at key times for the optimal development of the plants. These favorable conditions, which meant an absence of sanitary complications in the vineyard, were further enhanced by the heat of July and August. Although the cycle began a little later, veraison was accelerated to the point of happening earlier than in an average year.

The harvest took place in the last week of September and first of October and, despite the high temperatures and intermittent rains, the grapes were of very good quality.

Macán 2015 offers an energetic and fresh outlook. This is a voluptuous wine that is also deep and discerning.

VINEYARD CYCLE

From a meteorological perspective, the 2015 vintage was marked by a cool and very moist winter, reaching almost 500 l/m2 between October and March. This plentiful rainfall, added to a warm and dry spring, led to ideal conditions for budding and commencement of the growth cycle of the vines. Temperatures remained high throughout the summer, with sporadic storms that provided the required water for excellent ripening of the plant. All this meant healthy vines, suffering only from a couple of hailstorms that reduced the yield in the affected areas.

The harvest was carried out normally, between 17 September and 3 October, with dry weather, a good thermal contrast between day and night and, therefore, proper balance of the components of the grape.

A warm vintage supported by a very favorable winter.

During fermentation, in this first year of the new winery, the extraction process was very precise, which allowed for a better addition of wood during the aging phase, done in French oak barrels (50% new) and 4,000-liter foudres over 16 months.

Macán 2016 is the consolidation of the style we have pursued. This is a wine with density that is also fresh, concise and deep.

VINEYARD CYCLE

From a meteorological perspective, the 2016 vintage was marked by plentiful rainfall during the winter months which allowed for the accumulation of water reserves. These helped to tackle the effects of a very dry and fairly hot summer. Bud-break took place on 20 April, somewhat delayed compared to the year before, whereas flowering occurred on 20 June. During August and September, the water stress incidents aggravated the ripening problems stemming from excess production in many parcels throughout La Rioja. In the summer, the lack of rainfall resulted in bunches with smaller grapes at the start of the season, although the moderate rain that fell in the third week of September helped to complete the ripening process. These good weather conditions contributed to increase production forecasts.

The harvest began on 17 September and ended on 3 October.

The frost of the 28 April rendered the 2017 vintage a very challenging one. We had to adapt everything, from the configuration of the vats to the extra-special care taken in the extraction during the fermentation, and lastly with the presses, kept separate until June, for refinement before blending. During aging, the foudre played a key role in refining the texture of the tannins and the use of 50% new oak barrels helped to control sweetness.

Macán 2017, a challenging vintage of which we are very proud. This is a wine of good breeding, with freshness and depth.

VINEYARD CYCLE

Winter 2017 was generally mild and dry, with some cooler days in December and January, followed by almost springlike temperatures in February. Late frosts happened in April, one of the most severe having affected the vines. Spring brought forth occasional rain and suitable temperatures to boost the growth cycle. There was significant rainfall in June, whereas July featured occasional hailstorms that harmed the vines. Nevertheless, subsequent conditions helped towards their recovery. The rains at the end of August and beginning of September reduced the water scarcity and helped boost vine growth.

The harvest took place normally between 15 and 27 September under favorable weather conditions.

The Atlantic style of this 2018 vintage marked the wine produced in the year. A very productive year, with good water reserves; in other words, a vintage with a little less density but high levels of freshness and elegance. The harvest took place in October and required our utmost attention. We were able to extract more than usual and even increased the influence of the barrel by 5%.

Macán 2018, a vibrant, elegant and subtle vintage. This is a vintage characterized by nuances, accuracy, a feeling of culminating the definition of a style.

VINEYARD CYCLE

2018 was a cool and moist year with mild winter temperatures and abundant precipitation, including six snowfalls during the first quarter, which resulted in considerable water reserves in the soil. Sprouting was delayed by 10 days and plentiful rainfall and moderate temperatures continued throughout the spring. This led to a 2-week delay in ripening.

The harvest took place normally between 2 and 14 October.

In September 2019, when we tasted the grapes, these were still unripe, but the 80 liters of rainfall helped to refine the textures. 2019 was a year to watch out for over-ripening, in which identifying the ideal time to harvest became key. A vintage ideal for fermentation with little use of press wine and where the infusions were refined before blending. We also reduced the impact of the barrel in favor of the foudres, in our effort to tame the wine.

Macán 2019, a full-bodied vintage, juicy, a little timid, but with enormous potential for development.

VINEYARD CYCLE

2019 was a dry year. The lack of water during May, June and July affected performance in the vineyard, further conditioned by above average temperatures even in the fall and winter.

Ripening was affected by the drought, with very little fattening of the grapes. However, the 80 liters that fell during the first half of September helped to satisfy the vines’ water needs and led to the rapid fattening of the grapes.

Lastly, the weather respected the harvest, which took place in optimal conditions.
